Construction Employment Increases in 136 Out of 337 Metro Areas Between July 2010 and 2011

A recent analysis of federal employment data released by the Associated General Contractors of America shows construction employment has increased in 136 out of 337 metropolitan areas in the U.S. between July 2010 and July 2011. However, construction employment has declined in 148 areas and has stayed level in 53 of the 337 areas.

Among the leading metro areas that showed great increases in construction employment was Chicago-Joliet-Naperville, IL, with 12,900 jobs added, which is an 11 percent increase from last year. Lake County-Kenosha County, IL-WI had the highest percentage of added jobs at 23 percent (2,900 jobs).

Metro areas with the largest job losses were Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA, which lost 8,300 jobs (9 percent), and New York City, which lost 6,600 jobs (6 percent). The highest percentage of job loss (18 percent) occurred in Lewiston, ID and Panama City-Lynn Haven-Panama City Beach, FL.

Locally, Baltimore-Towson, MD has shown a 1 percent decrease in construction jobs from last year (700 jobs). Statewide, Maryland has had a 4 percent decrease from last year, which equates to a total loss of 6,200 jobs. As for Washington, DC, there has been a slight increase of 1 percent from last year, with 129 construction jobs added.
