New Residential Construction Statistics for July 2013


The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have recently announced new residential construction statistics for July 2013. According to the data, building permits for privately-owned housing units in July were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 943,000, up 2.7 percent from the revised June rate of 918,000 and up 12.4 percent from the July 2012 rate of 839,000. Building permits for single-family housing in July were estimated at 613,000, down 1.9 percent from the revised June rate of 625,000. Building permits for units in buildings with five units or more in July were at a rate of 303,000.

In July, privately-owned housing starts were at an adjusted rate of 896,000, up 5.9 percent from June’s revised estimate of 846,000 and up 20.9 percent from the July 2012 rate of 741,000. Single-family housing starts were at a rate of 591,000 in July, down 2.2 percent from the revised June rate of 604,000. For units in buildings with five units or more, the July rate was 290,000.

As for housing completions, the July rate for privately-owned housing was at a seasonally adjusted annual estimate of 774,000, up 1.8 percent from June’s revised rate of 760,000 and up 15.0 percent from the July 2012 estimate of 673,000. Single-family housing completions were at a rate of 571,000 for July, putting it 5.9 percent above June’s revised rate of 539,000. The housing completion rate for units in buildings with five units or more was at 195,000 in July.
