The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development both released new residential construction statistics for June 2013.
According to the data, building permits of privately-owned housing units were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 911,000 for June 2013, down 7.5 percent from the revised May rate, but up 16.1 percent from June 2012. Authorizations of single-family homes in June were at a rate of 624,000, putting it 0.6 percent above the revised May rate. Permits of units in buildings with five units or more were at a June rate of 261,000.
Regarding housing starts, the rate in June for privately-owned houses was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 836,000, down 9.9 percent from the revised May rate, but up 10.4 percent from June 2012. Single-family housing starts were at a rate of 591,000 for June, down 0.8 percent from the revised May figure. Units in buildings with five units or more were at a June rate of 236,000.
Finally, privately-owned housing completions were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 755,000 in June, making it 6.3 percent above the revised May figure and 20.2 percent above the June 2012 rate. Single-family housing completions in June were at a rate of 554,000, down 1.1 percent from the revised May rate. The rate in June for units in buildings with five units or more was 188,000.
